Celebrating Father's Day

Mrs. Sharp from "Reviving Victorian Family Celebrations" asks the question: "What is it men would sincerely like for Father's Day? Fathers want exactly the same thing that mothers do. Acknowledgment and recongnition of their effors on behalf of their family."

One tradition for helping children observe Father's Day is an annual scrapbook of appreciation recounting all Dad did, with and for, the children during the preceeding year. Did Dad help someone with a school project? Read through the entire book of "Winnie-the-Pooh?" Teach a child how to ride a bicycle, swing a bat, or tie a shoe? Good-naturedly allow yet another stray animal to become a family pet? (This happened at our home this past year!). If he did, encourage the children to show their appreciaition with a loving memory book containing photographs, funny captions, cartoons, and drawings commemorating their year together. Have each child write (or dictate) a letter for Dad thanking hiim for all he does and letting him know how much he is loved.

Here are a few things we are doing to celebrate Dad this coming Sunday.

We are making Dad a Photo Frame and surprising him with it on his desk.

These Airplane Cards were fun and easy to make. The blue one says, "I Love My Dad Because..." with some heart bullet points for children to write down their reasons. The striped one says, "Many men are Fathers but it takes someone special to be a Daddy."

Lastly, we are going to make Dad some candy bags with his favorite treats and clever messages printed out on tags.

"Because you make us roll with laughter"
"Because you're the jolliest, sweetest Dad"
"Because you're an all-American classic"
"Because you work so hard for all of us"
"Because we love you More & More each day"

I hope you have fun getting ready for this special day!
