Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!" Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!
This week I want to show you my record player and records. I bought the player a few years ago at a consignment store. I have many of the records I listened to when I was little and I wanted to introduce the girls and Benjamin to them! I keep the player and records in our entertainment center so it's easy to pull everything out.
Growing up, my very favorite singer was Evie. She began recording Christian music as a young teenager in the 1970's. Some of my records have been damaged or lost so I'm slowly replacing them thanks to Ebay!

I also enjoy listening to Linda Ronstadt (The Blue Bayou is my favorite!) and being the good Canadian that I am, Anne Murray is at the top of my favorite list. :0)

ReplyDeleteWe have Bullfrogs and Butterflies. I grew up listening to Music Machine (which is 'related' to the Bullfrogs and Butterflies). It's a very nice record player.

ReplyDeleteI remember going to my grandma's house. She had quite the record collection. We'd rollerskate in her basement as we listened to records. Those were fun days!
I love Psalty! Anne Murray is good too.
My sister had a record player very similar to that one. I have a "new" record player that my hubby bought me a couple of years ago. My teenage son and his friends love to get it out and listen to my old, ancient, 1970's records!

Oh Kelli, you brought back so many memories for me with that record player and records...I had one very similar to that one! I didn't have many records as a child but I still have all my records I bought when I was a teen:-) xox

ReplyDeletePsalty was my all-time favorite. I also enjoyed Dottie Rambo and the Creekbank Kids, Colby the Robot, and Rex Humbard's Kids Under Construction.
I think it's so neat to be able to share the music you enjoyed as a child with your kids. :)

I had Evie LPs too, now I think I have one on CD. Can't play my records anymore as I have no player.
ReplyDeleteI am familiar with some of your childhood albums because I used their songs with the children's choir I directed as a teenager ~ lol! But Linda Ronstadt and Anne Murray ~ now that's just fine singing anyway you cut it! Second only to maybe the Carpenters (I loved them!). Fun post!! :o)

I remember phonographs very well! My grandpa worked for a vending machine company and I would often request the old records that they removed!

These are wonderful! When I talk about my record player and records, my children give me sort of a 'huh...poor you' look! LOL But what wonderful memories!

What I meant by the 'poor you' look was, I think 'they' think I missed out by not having a CD player, etc. We ONLY had record players! But then again, I remember not having a microwave, etc. And I remember black/white t.v.'s, tape decks, AC window units, window fans, and refrigerators that had to be defrosted, etc. LOL I think I'm turning into a relic! LOL

How neat! I used to have a record player that looked alot like this one but it was blue. I got it for Christmas when I was 5, I loved that thing:)

This brought back such great memories for me, Kelli. As a teenager each week I would go to the Mall and spend my babysitting money on a top 45 record ~ as I recall they were 99cents:o) I'm sure my Mama remembers me playing them over and over and over! LOL I also remember when the needle would go bad you could put a nickel on top and it would work perfectly!!

ReplyDeleteHow neat is that!! I wish I still had records from my childhood -- I had one set of all the basic kid's songs. The only one I have is from Cinderella (seen at the bottom of this post: http://barbarah.wordpress.com/2006/08/22/tackle-it-tuesday-record-collection/ I loved it because it had a picture from the film right on the record). I do still have a lot of classical and sacred record albums from my college and early married years, and many of them are irreplaceable -- so i will probably always have a record player in the house.

I loved Evie, too, and then in fifth grade I heard a very young Amy Grant (I think she was just 15 or 16 then).Our daughter now has Evie mixed in with her 40's and 50's record collection :)

ReplyDeleteWe loved listening to records in the 'red room' growing up - named for the RED shag carpet that still cover the floor! We listened to my dad's old 45's and our favorite was "Beep beep, beep beep , the horn went beep beep beep!" - I'm sure it is a classic now! We also listened to Marcie and other records, but I have long forgotten their titles! I loved Evie too, as a girl, but I think those were on 8-track tapes, along with John Denver! Oh, the memories ~ thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI remember as a young girl going to the store to buy my first 45. I was around 9 or 10 and I was with my older, cooler cousin (she was around 16 or 17)...thanks for helping me to remember a great time from my childhood!
ReplyDeleteWhat great memories. My sister and I had quite a large collection of 45's that we left behind at our parent's home and my father sold them at a flea market.:o( I miss those simple times, hanging out with our friends and listening to each other's records.

Your post reminds me of my grandmother (I call her Memaw), who still has a furniture like record player in her living room. I keep telling her that she can buy Elvis CD's and play them in her CD player but she won't hear of it! haha!

Your record player brought back so many memories. But, I think I'm much older than you! I don't remember many of your choices, but I do love Anne Murray and Linda Ronstadt is one of my favorites. Her "Heart Like a Wheel" album ALWAYS reminds me of my first boyfriend. It is amazing the things I remember when I hear any song from that album.

ReplyDeleteYAY!!! "Bullfrogs and butterflies, they've both been born again!!!" LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!! We had that, and the Music Machine too. I still sing "good morning, good morning good morning, it's time to rise and shine...the sun is up get out of bed, you've got to get up you sleepy head the day is dawning just for you and all your dreams, are coming truuuuuuue!!!" to my kids in the morning. Oh, how I miss those records!!!!!!
