Homemade Seed Packets

Thank you for your comments on the wedding pictures! We got home very late two nights in a row, so I'm still catching up on sleep, but I was able to work on a small project this weekend.

Packets
Homemade seed packets.

Sunflower
Some of you may remember the surprise sunflower that popped up in Emily's garden.

Sunflower
It was time to harvest the seeds.

Seeds
Lots of seeds!

Seeds
Benjamin was my helper.

Seeds
Final count: 870!

Paper
I traced a seed packet template onto scrapbook paper. Then folded and glued the edges.

Paper
I printed out the name of the flower and a short poem on white paper, cut with decorative scissors and dabbed the edges with a gold ink pad.

Packet
I added a bow and now they are ready to tuck into letters or save for small Christmas gifts.

I was just asking my husband about sunflower seeds..

so my question is.. could you have eaten those seeds or how do they get from the flower to the kind you can eat?

silly question, but i have no idea how these things work LOL

  7. Kelli, I have this template in my scrapbook supplies and years ago, used it for everything. Never thought about seeds... And you present it so pretty!!! I have a cypress fern in the mail box planter. Folks knock on the door, stop in in the church hallways and grocery stores....

I need to get that template out. I need to buy some of that beautiful gold stamping ink. :-)

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  11. This is so helpful, Kelli. I have the Skyscraper Sunflowers and had no idea how to harvest the seeds!

Where do you get all of your ideas?

  12. That is a great idea! I don't know what is wrong with me, but I never thought to pass along my flower seeds to others as gifts. Maybe it is because they don't look very gift-like in a sandwich bag and twist-tie!

    Thanks!

  26. What a wonderful gift! Too bad our little sunflowers that the birds "planted" don't ever seem to produce seed. I may try that with my radish seeds though. I think my secret prayer partner would love it.

  47. Fantastic project Kelli - I can't imagine that many seeds from one flower - why do the seeds cost so much in the stores - and they certainly are NOT in lovely packaging like yours! Excellent job! We have some dinner plate hibiscus seeds that I'll have to try to do something pretty with.

  49. Kelli,

What a wonderful idea! Were the seeds difficult to get out of the sunflower? For some reason, that picture gave me goosebumps! lol

  51. Yout Sunflowers are beautiful and the packets are so different and really made me think about my own Sunflowers. I hadn't thought of making these Big beauty's into a gift of any kind. We harvest the whole flower head and set them one by one for the birds and other critters that might want to enjoy them. You do some really fun crafts.
