Apple Pie
Pecan Pie

Kitchen
I think we ran the dishwasher 4 times!

Thank you for your well wishes for Daisy. She is feeling much better! This past Friday, we hosted a Thanksgiving dessert party at our house.

We visited, sang songs and of course, ate lots of sweet treats!

Cake
Gingerbread with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting. I used my Gingerbread Cupcake recipe.

I also picked up brownie bites and a cheesecake at Costco.

Cheesecake

Dessert
My mother-in-law has been staying with us for a few weeks and helped me set everything up. We also served coffee, apple cider and hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Maple Cream Cheese Cakelets ~ Giving Thanks

Acorns
Aren't these little acorn cakes sweet? Many of you know how much I love acorns, so when I saw this Williams Sonoma pan, I couldn't resist it.

Acorns
It was ridiculously expensive, especially for someone who is used to finding muffin tins at the thrift store, but we've been using it often and have each cakelet down to 20 cents
each. ;0)

Acorns

Acorns
Last week I made some buttery brown sugar cakelets filled with maple cream cheese and topped with crunchy turbinado sugar.

Muffins
The good news is, they can be made with mini muffin pans and are just as yummy!

Muffin

~Maple Cream Cheese Cakelets~
Makes 24 mini muffins

For the cakelets:

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp. ginger

1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/2 cup milk

3/4 tsp vanilla extract

8 tbs. (1 stick) butter, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup white sugar

2 eggs, lightly beaten

For the glaze:

1/4 cup white sugar

1/4 cup maple syrup

2 tbs. water

For the frosting:

2 tbs. butter, softened
2 oz. cream cheese, softened
3 tbs. maple syrup

1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

Raw (turbinado) sugar for decorating

1. Preheat oven to 350F. To make the cakelets, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Set aside.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the flat beater, beat the butter on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 30 seconds.

3. Add the brown sugar and white sugar and continue beating until light and fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes, stopping the mixer occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

4. Add the eggs a little at a time, beating well after each addition.

5. Reduce the speed to low and add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the milk mixture and beginning and ending with the flour. Beat each addition just until incorporated, stopping the mixer occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

6. Spoon batter into 24 greased mini muffin pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakelets comes out clean, about 10 minutes.

7. Let cool in pan for 5 minutes, then removed to wire rack.

8. Meanwhile make the glaze: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, maple syrup and water. Cook until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is slightly thickened, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

9. Set the rack with the cakelets over a sheet of waxed paper. Using a pastry brush, brush the warm cakelets with the glaze. Let cool completely.

10. To make the frosting: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk, beat the butter and cream cheese on high speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce the speed to low, add the maple syrup and confectioners' sugar and beat until combined, 2 to 3 minutes, stopping the beater occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

11. Frost cakelets and sprinkle with tubinado sugar.

Thanksgiving Poem

Pie

When all the leaves are off the boughs,
And nuts and apples gathered in,
And cornstalks waiting for the cows,
And pumpkins safe in barn and bin,
Then Mother says, "My children dear,
The fields are brown, and autumn flies;
Thanksgiving Day is very near,
And we must make thanksgiving pies!

Fabric Leaves and Acorns ~ Giving Thanks

Fabric Leaves
I first heard about these fabric fall leaves from my friend, Clarice. She sent me one last year and it was so pretty. The girls and I made quite a few this past October, along with acorns. I think they make wonderful Thanksgiving gifts for a friend, hostess gifts or decorations.

Acorn

Acorns
Fat quarters and fabric scraps are perfect for this project.

Clarice has the instructions for the leaves, please visit her to make some of your own!

Templates
For the acorns I enlarged a template in my word processor and printed them out.

Acorns

Acorn
Add a little fabric glue to attach the top to the acorn.

Acorn
You could sew a small bead on the very top.

Acorn
Or glue a bit of ribbon to the back. If I had thought of it earlier, I would have tucked it between the fabric, while making the acorns.

Acorn

Acorns

Tag
I also made a tag and and tied it around the leaf stems.

Rearranging the Dining Room ~ Giving Thanks

Autumn stand
Phillip's mom has been staying at our house while she recovers from surgery. Yesterday, I was telling her how this portable island cart in front of my laundry room door makes me claustophobic.

Dining room
She had the great idea of moving it into the far corner of my dining room, where the tree is.

Kitchen
Much less cluttered now.

Dining Room

Tea corner
It makes the perfect tea cart! We moved the tree into my bedroom and hung a picture that I already had. Thank you for taking a look!

Autumn

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.

The fields, their yellow grain,

So open wide the doorway-

Thanksgiving comes again!

Thanksgiving Place Setting ~ Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving menu
Today I am sharing some ideas for Thanksgiving place settings. Phillip's mom gave me this china a few years ago and I love getting it out for family dinners. Menu cards are extra special touches for your table and are very easy to make.

Thanksgiving menu
I printed out my menu on scrapbook paper, and glued it to cream cardstock.

Then finished it off with a bow. Size: 6 1/2" x 3 3/4"

Organizing Before and After ~ Giving Thanks

Drawer
I'm concentrating on my kitchen drawers today. Sorry for the dark pictures, my kitchen light wasn't working.

Drawer

Drawer

Here are my "after" pictures...
Organizer
For my kitchen junk drawer I found this neat organizer at Walmart. The top tray slides up and down and there are plenty of little sections. I measured the width, but never thought to measure the depth and length.

Drawer
No matter how hard I tried, I could not get it to fit. I ended up using the smaller section, along with another organizer I had. It's amazing how much "junk" I ended up getting rid of!

Organizer
A few weeks ago I found a big bag of vintage hem bias tape and lace trim at the thrift store, so I put all of it in the larger section of the organizer.

Drawer

Drawer

Stovetop
I moved my wooden spoons to a mason jar on my stovetop.

Carpet
I also gave Phillip's office a deep cleaning. Daisy likes to sneak pencils under his desk and chew them up.

Daisy
She also likes empty milk dud boxes.

Daisy
Can you tell she gets away with anything and everything? ;0)

Dollhouse
Our poor doll house has been empty (except for junk and dust) for several months. When Daisy was a puppy she liked to eat the furniture, so I put everything up until she was older.

Grace
Grace had fun going through everything this afternoon.

Dollhouse
And she did a *wonderful* job setting everything up again!

Thanksgiving Prayer

Autumn

O Lord, with humble hearts we pray
Thy blessing this Thanksgiving Day

And ask that at table place,

Where grateful folk say words of grace,

That Thou will come to share the yield

Thy bounty gave to farm and field.

We pray thy love will bless,
O Lord,
Each hearth,
Each home, each festive board;

And that Thy peace will come to stay

Where candles glow,
Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Cornucopia Centerpiece ~ Giving Thanks

Dining Room
A cornucopia is a traditional Thanksgiving centerpiece and I put together a very simple one this year.

Cornucopia
I set a cornucopia basket on the table and wrapped a fall leaf garland all around. Then I placed a small pumpkin inside.

Cornucopia
I scattered three gourds and lots of pinecones around.

Cleaning Before and After ~ Giving Thanks

I will be cleaning and organizing my kitchen and dining room this week, since it's the messiest. Well, there's the linen closet, but we won't talk about that. ;0) Maybe if I'm feeling extra energetic, I'll get to that, too.
Spice rack
This spice rack over my stove, was a wedding present from my parents. It is in major need of dusting and I know for a fact that the ground coriander is 14 years and 5 months old.

Spice Rack
I will give everything a good cleaning and fill up the jars with fresh dried herbs and spices. Oh, and hopefully locate the missing jars in my pantry.

Canisters
I will also be cleaning and refilling my glass canisters. I will post "after" pictures later this afternoon.

Here are my "after" pictures...

Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie.

Corn husks
You will need 6 husks for each doll. Soak husks in sink or bowl of warm water until they are soft and bendable. This takes about 15 minutes.

Corn husks
Lay husks on towel. You will need to make your doll while they are still wet.

Corn Husks
Choose four husks about the same size and lay them down on top of another.

Corn husk doll
Tie the pointy ends together close to the top. It helps to have a buddy when making the dolls. Make sure you get the string very tight and tie several knots. Trim ends.

Corn husk doll
Separate the husks into two sections (two husks in each hand) and flip them over so that the string is inside.

Corn husk doll
This forms the doll's head.

Corn husk doll
Tie a string around the husks to make the head.

Corn husk doll
Take another corn husk and smooth it flat. Trim the pointed end straight across with scissors.

Corn husk doll
Roll the husk into a tight tube and tie each end of tube with a piece of string. This forms the arms.

Corn husk doll
Separate the husks again (two in each hand).

Corn husk doll
Place the tube between the body husks, right below the head, so that an arm sticks out on each side.

Corn husk doll
Make a waist for the doll by tying a piece of string around the body husks below the arms.

Corn husk doll
Take another husk and roll up, loosely.

Corn husk doll
Warp it around the back of the neck and criss-cross across the chest.

Corn husk doll
Bring back around to the back and secure with string.

Corn husk doll

Corn husk doll
Your doll is finished and should have a beautiful corn husk skirt. Set aside to dry.

Corn husk doll
You can also make pants by cutting up the center of husks.

Corn husk doll
And tying string at the ankles and knees.

Corn husk dolls
Corn husk doll faces are usually left blank, but we added a little blush to their cheeks.

Corn husk doll
We also gave our dolls tiny straw hats decorated with flowers.

Thank you for taking a look and let me know if you make some, too. They would be so cute added to a Thanksgiving centerpiece or place even card holders!

Homemade Journal~Paper Crafting Thursday!

The winners of last week's paper crafting are Kayla and Krissie. Please email me your addresses and I'll get your prizes in the mail!

Little Women
Today I am sharing the step-by-step instructions for the Little Women journal I made last month. You could easily turn it into a card instead, though.

Little Women

Journal
I use a cardboard template that I found at Michaels awhile back, but the main size is 9" x 6"

Journal
Cut a 9" x 6 " rectangle from cardstock.

Journal
Fold in half.

Journal
Cover with a 5 3/4" x 4 1/4" piece of scrapbook paper.

Book
Photocopy a picture and quote from a favorite book.

Frame
I add a paper frame around the picture, but this is optional.

Little Women
Glue to front of journal.

Paper
Tear around quote.

Paper
Dab edges with matching ink pad.

Journal
Glue to front of journal.

Paper
Cut a 4 1/2" x 1" strip of matching scrapbook paper. Trim top and bottom edges with decorative scissors.

Paper
Make small pencil marks at the following measurements (from left to right): 1/4", 1/2", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 3 1/4", 3 1/2", 4 1/4"

Paper
With a craft knife, make small slits at the pencil marks.

Ribbon
Thread a 28" length of ribbon through slits, as shown.

Journal
Glue ribbon strip to front of journal.

Journal
Add stickers or other embellishments.

Ribbon
Bring ribbon around the back of journal and tie a bow on the right side.

Tuck folded sheets of cardstock inside journal for pages to write on. They are not attached in any way, just held in by the ribbon.

Journal
I also made a Secret Garden version.

Recipe book
And a recipe journal.

Here are a few other things I made this week:
Christmas tags
Toile Christmas tags

Christmas bookmark
Christmas Lace Bookmarks.

Thanksgiving Tree

Thank you so much for sharing your plans and favorite things about November with me! Another fun thing we do this month is make a Thanksgiving Tree.

Thanksgiving tree
It's a wonderful way to record your family's many blessings.

Thanksgiving Tree
I used two 12 x 12 pieces of brown paper: one for the trunk and the other for the branches. Both rough drawn and cut.

Thanksgiving Tree
Taped to the kitchen wall.

Leaves
In the past I have traced cookie cutters for the leaves.

Leaves
This year I was lazy and found these already cut out ones in the Target scrapbook section. :0)

Thanksgiving tree
Every day we write down a couple of things we are thankful for.

Thanksgiving tree
And add them to the branches. By Thanksgiving our tree will be full!

Celebrate November!

Now the autumn days are gone
Frost is sparkling on the lawn,
Windows winking cheerful lights
Warm the cold November nights.
Sky

November
Welcome November!

Postcards
November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.
~ Clyde Watson
Leaves
Dull November brings the blast,
Then the leaves are whirling fast.
- Sara Coleridge

Pumpkin
I'm going to whip up a batch of these Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Squares soon!

Dark Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Squares

2 1/4 c. flour
2 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
4 beaten eggs
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 c. canned pumpkin
1 - 2 c. (dark) chocolate chips

Spray a 9 x 13 inch pan with cooking spray, or butter. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Sift together dry ingredients. In another bowl cream butter and sugars. Add eggs, beating well; add pumpking filling and mix. Add flour mixture to sugar mixture and blend. Add 1 cup chocolate chips & mix together. Spread into prepared pan and bake for about 45 minutes.

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway-
Thanksgiving comes again!

Dessert
This is such an exciting month with lots of things to celebrate. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and as we spend time with family, we count our many blessings. What are you most looking forward, to?
