Today I would like to share some memories of my Papa. When I was little and visiting my Nana and Papa's house, I always knew where to find him. He would be down in the basement, watching sports or western shows. I never liked when wresting was on, but we did watch plenty of "Bonanza" episodes together!
Some of my favorite memories are from when I was older. The year after I got married (1995), my Nana and Papa came to visit us in South Dakota. I drove back with them to their home in Canada for a three week visit. It was such a fun cross-country trip. My Nana and I tend to get a little silly (crazy!) when we are together and my Papa put up with all of it during those long hours on the road! He also stopped anywhere my Nana and I wanted to do a little shopping! :0)
The last time I saw him was three years ago, when we went up to Canada, for a visit. My Papa has a special way with little ones. The girls and Benjamin were "attached to his hip" our entire visit!
Benjamin was three at the time and still remembers the special treat Papa made for him: a bowl of sliced bananas, with milk and a sprinkle of sugar on top.
Here is another treat (a much healthier one!) that he made for my siblings and I when we were younger. It's called a Man in the Boat.
Cut a square or rectangle out of a piece of bread.
Melt some butter in skillet over medium heat and add the bread.
Crack an egg into center of bread.
Cook until bottom bread is toasted and then flip. When the egg is done, remove onto a plate.
Butter both sides of bread square and toast in same skillet.
Mmm...this is my favorite part!
Now the man has a hat!
This makes a fun lunch!

What a sweet post about your Papa!!! We make those eggs in a hole too--actually those are Tony's favorite way to eat eggs:) I will have to try it in a square next time.

I used to cut a circle in a slice of bread and cook the egg inside; we called it egg in a nest. My sons thought eggs were better cooked that way so we had them fairly often. Since they're married and gone I don't fix it anymore, maybe sometime for the grandchildren.

I think if you asked my kids their favorite memory of their Paw-Paw it would be riding with him on the tractor. That was major entertainment for 3 little boys growing up.

So sweet...those papa's.....we lost ours last April. He was 87. I miss him so. Cherish your times with him. The sandwich sounds and looks great.

I'm short on bread and have a ton of fresh from the farm eggs--sounds like a "man in the boat" would be a goood lunch for the kids today. Maybe some canned peaches on the side.

lpGlad you enjoyed the maple cookies. They are a tried and true old family recipe that we like because it is so easy to whip up and tastes so good.
Your man in the boat recipe is way too cute and having a family story to attach to it is all the better.
Kelli - I had a Poppa and Nanny too - but they are both with the Lord now! I'm glad you and your children have such special memories of your Papa - I am blessed with great memories too, but our daughter only vaguely remembers her Poppa David and he was gone before our son was born.
We make the same egg toast, but we cut the hole with a glass and it is called 'Bird in a Nest' and we all anjoy it here - especially the little butter toasted cut out! We still eat bananas and milk and sugar - for dessert ! Mmmm!
What a wonderful post, so sweet!! We made a sandwich similar to that in HS home ec - but it was a circle and I think the name had 'frog' in it, but I can't remember! What a sweet Papa you have!

Love the Man in the Boat idea. Good thing I stopped by because I am going to cook the boys some of them for supper. Easy and cheap! They love egg sandwiches so I bet they will love this too.

That is a cool! I've never done that before.
We've had ham/egg/cheese biscuits.
But I've never thought to make it like that. I'm going to be trying that the next time we have eggs.

Awww...I knew there was a reason why I liked you! You call your grandpa "Papa" just like we did. Oh how I miss my Papa's too. My daughter and I were just looking at pictures of one of my Papa's, an Austrian immigrant a minute ago. I can't wait to see him again. His arms will be the second I jump into in heaven. I have to jump into my daddy's first! Thanks for your sweet memories.

My husband makes the same thing but he cuts the bread with a round cookie cutter and he calls it Egg in a basket.
Isn't always the simplest things that make the biggest memories for us?

My 12 year old learnt how to do this at Home Economics just last week
Its easy enough for him to do and he likes cooking

I've been a bit of a lurker, but I just had to comment. I was telling my kids the other day about spending the night with my grandmother (BEFORE I went to live with her.) She would always make me "Egg in a Frame" for breakfast. It looks just the same, but with a circle instead. Funny how it was a fond memory for me as well!

Yummy...this was standard girl scout camping breakfast. But we called it "One eye toast". I haven't had it in years, but I think I might have to have it this weekend!
