Apple Fritters

Hello everyone! I made a fun Autumn snack yesterday: Apple Fritters. I found the recipe from Amy, who has one of my favorite blogs, Simple Folk. She got the recipe from Tina at Garden Goose, who was sweet enough to give me permission to share the recipe with you! Thank you, Tina!

Batter

I used "Honeycrunch" apples.
Apple

Apple Fritters


2 cups self rising flour
3 tablespoons sugar

2 eggs well beaten

1 cup milk

2 cups tart apples, chopped


Sift together dry ingredients. Gradually add beaten eggs and milk combined. Refrigerate batter for about 2 hours. Stir in the apples. Drop by tablespoon into hot oil and fry until golden brown. Roll in powdered sugar or a sugar/cinnamon combination.


I haven't fried anything in at least 8 years so I was a little nervous. I'm happy to report that I didn't burn my house down. ;0) The fritters fried up very quickly and easily and they weren't greasy at all.

I cooked the fritters on medium heat.

Then rolled them in cinnamon sugar.

Help yourself!

If you have any leftovers and want them to stay crispy on the outside, don't cover them.

Those look SO delicious! I am terribly TERRIBLY afraid of frying since I don't have one of those fabulous fry-daddy things...but you make it look so easy! Maybe, JUST maybe, I will have to try them.

PS. So THAT is the secret to keeping things fried crispy on the outside-not covering them?! Neat. That is good to know...

My mom used to make them when I was a child and she still makes them for my dad. We both love them...we additional put a mix of sugar and cinnamon on top of the fritters. Very, very tasty.

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe Kelli!! I wanted a good Apple Fritter recipe. We visited our local Apple Orchard last weekend and I am looking for more recipes. The Apple Barn Restaurant in Gatlinburg, TN serves these with Apple Butter and is a nice added touch too!

I think this is the third recipe of yours that I bookmarked to come back to when it gets cooler outside.

It turned from hot to COLD so this recipe may just be made tomorrow. I have all the ingredients and it looks yummy.

We both just remembered.... The ones we had were not sugared. They were simply fried. And then served with Maple Syrup.

We both remember that we had them at a restaurant somewhere around here. But we can't remember the name of the restaurant. :-)

You mentioned using "Honeycrunch" Apples....I believe the correct name is "Honeycrisp". It is very juicy and crunchy, but not tart, as the recipe calls for. It probably worked well for the apple fritters because of the crunch. It doesn't get real soft when cooked so it's not generally used for sauce or pies (although the taste is good, the most people want a softer texture for those dishes).

If someone wanted a more tart, but still crunchy apple a better choice would be a Macintosh, JonaMac, or Empire.

Just thought I'd pass on some info I use daily in my work at a farm market in Michigan's fruit belt. Happy eating!

Yikes, I can't believe you have 30 comments!! My father-in-law is known as the fritter man at all of the stores around here that sell apple fritters--he loves them. However I don't think I could fry anything....even for him!! lol

I am making these today. We have SOOOOO many apples...and I have what I believe is honeycrisp. They are yellow-greenish and very sweet, not tart. YUMMMMM~
