Weekend Chit~Chat

Linens
Thank you for your help on how to care for my new linen placemats and napkins. You weren't kidding when you said they would get wrinkled after washing!

Napkin
I ironed them and then went to the fabric store, where I found this green print. I cut out shamrocks and will applique one onto a corner of each napkin. Doing the first one is always fun, but the question is, will I finish all four. ;0) I only have 17 days, so I'd better get busy.

Buttermilk
I also wanted to show you my homemade buttermilk. I got the recipe from Amy at Simple Folk and it was so easy to make!

Buttermilk
All you need is: cultured buttermilk for your starter, whole milk and a quart jar. Go HERE for the recipe.

Cake
Tonight, I put the buttermilk to good use by making Amy's Sugar Cookie Cake.

Cake
It has a delicious topping and the cake is moist and really does taste like a sugar cookie! We enjoyed a piece with a glass of milk while watching The Secret Garden.

Well, I'm off to enjoy the weekend with my family. I'll talk to you all soon!

"Show and Tell Friday!"

Welcome to “Show and Tell Friday!” Do you have something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, or a treasured collection. Look around your home for something to share; dig through those boxes in your closet if you have to! Share photos and the story that goes with your special item.

The resale store was calling my name yesterday and I'm glad I listened. ;0) Here are a few things that I found...
Wreath
A new spring wreath for my front door. Cost: $3.09.

Wreath
The green leaves and pink berries are perfect for spring.

Wreath
I added the bow when we got home.

Napkins
Four blue toile napkins. Cost: $2.09

Napkins
A romantic scene.

Linens
I also found this unopened box of 4 placemats and 4 napkins.

Napkins
They were $8.00, which I more than I usually pay for something at the resale store, but it is Irish linen and I plan on embroidering little shamrocks in the corners.

Napkins
I'm not sure how to care for the fabric though. Can I wash them in the machine? Cold or hot water? Can I iron them?

Plate
And lastly, I spotted a box with this tiny lettuce bunny plate. I opened it up and found...

Teaset
a mini tea set! Cost: $1.50.

Tea pot

We'll have to invite the bunny fairies over for tea!

Thank you for looking at my show and tell!

The Secret Garden

Book
Ever since my mom introduced me to The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett when I was 12, I've been obsessed in love with anything having to do with the story.

Book
I have several copies of the book, a journal, notecards, three versions of the movie (I only like the one by Hallmark) and I've been learning Nocturne in E minor by Chopin, which is the theme song of the movie, on the piano.

Bird
So, when I came across this sweet face in the resale store this afternoon, I immediately thought of the 'The Robin Who Showed The Way.'

Secret garden
I found a little silver dish, laid down some moss, added two small pots, a robin's egg and a rusty key.

Secret Garden
It's the perfect spot for a little robin!

Winter Quick Breads

Hello everyone! Thank you for sharing your lovely garden dreams with me yesterday. It sounds like many of us have similar plans for this coming spring!

Now, I know that winter isn't quite over, so I'm sharing some quick bread recipes that will hopefully cheer the long and dark days.

Banana Bread
The first one is a classic Banana Bread that is one of my favorite snacks.

Banana Bread
If there are any leftovers, try a slice toasted for breakfast.

Orange Spice Loaf
The second one is an Orange Spice Loaf with Marmalade Butter. Everyone at my house gave it two thumbs up!

~Garden Dreams~

Victoria
Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I picked up the latest issue of Victoria magazine and found myself dreaming of...

Magazine
hidden ponds and secret gardens...

Magazine
wildflowers and fairies...

Magazine
and sweet home~grown strawberries.

Magazine
I also discovered that eating a jam made of marigolds or calendula will make fairies visible to the naked eye. So *that's* why I didn't see any last year. ;0)

Pots
Even though my own gardens never end up looking like the magazine pictures, that doesn't stop me from having fun. I have my seed pots ready to go.

Cupboard
My seed cupboard is full.

Seeds

Books
And my gardening books are ready to be read again.

Benjamin
What is this? Oh, it's a cute pirate that has come to wake me from my dreams!

Share your garden dreams with me!

Sunday Evening

Tea
Good evening! Tonight is the final part of Pride and Prejudice on PBS. We have our tea and snack ready. Is anyone else watching it?

Hello everyone! Did you know that today is George Washington's birthday? I thought I would show you my stamp collection, since I have many George Washington stamps. :0)
Books
I started collecting stamps when I was around 10 years old. I had a few friends who also collected them and we would trade our favorites back and forth. As you can see, I have lots of stamp books on my shelf. The red Traveler Stamp Album was the one that started it all.

Boxes
I dug these boxes out of my closet this afternoon. They are filled with even more stamps!

Stamps
Who knows when I will have time to go through these, but I still enjoy having them.

Envelopes
I do have some of them organized. This box is full of envelopes and each envelope represents a country. Guess what they are filled with? ;0)

Book
This is an old stamp book that I got on ebay a few years ago.

Note
It belonged to an Elizabeth H. Andrews from Cambridge, Mass.

These stamps are from 1847.

Speaking of George Washington, we have a tradition of baking a cherry pie for his birthday each year.

Homemade Cherry Pie

Pie
In honor of George Washington's birthday, we made a cherry pie!

Cherry Pie

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. almond extract
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
2 (14.5 oz.) cans of red tart cherries, NOT cherry pie filling (look for pitted cherries, packed in water)
Pastry for double pie crust

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In saucepan, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon and undrained cherries. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and boils (about 7 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in almond extract.

Pour mixture into a 9-inch unpacked pie shell. Dot with butter. Cover with top crust and seal edges and crimp. If a lattice crust is not used, put one or several vents in the crust. Bake at 400F for 30-35 minutes or until crust is brown.

Pie
You can serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired!

~A New Desk~

Desk
Hello everyone! Today we went to visit a friend and she happened to be getting rid of a desk. I'm not one to pass up free furniture, even if I am running out of room in our 1800 square foot house ;0) Grace and Emily wanted to use it for a letter writing desk, so we loaded it into our van and stopped by Goodwill to look for a chair.

Chair
Look what we found! It's white and it fits perfectly.

Price
This was the original price tag. We got it for $5.99!

Stamps
We also found a small crystal bowl for holding stamps.

Bowl and pitcher
And a mini bowl and pitcher for writing pens.

Letter box
I gave the girls this small box for holding letters and stamps.

Desk
We already had the pictures which complete the new little writing nook. Not bad for just under $10.00!

Signs of Spring?

Pansies
It's only February 20th, but spring arrives early in Texas. Look at these cheery faces!

Bird
I heard a noise on the back patio this morning and saw that our Mourning Dove friends are back. They seemed to think that my grapevine candle chandelier was a good nesting spot.

Bird
They eventually changed their minds, and made themselves at home in their usual kleenex box on top of the electric meter.

Plants
Here are some more signs of spring: Emily spotted some vegetable seedlings at the store this past weekend. We got some spinach, romaine and butter crunch lettuce, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage.

Moss
I also picked up some bright green Irish moss. I get two pots each spring and enjoy them until the hot summer begins.

Winter
With all of these signs of spring, I figured it was time to pack away the winter decorations. No more pinecones, cinnamon sticks and holly berries.

Teacup
It's time for bunnies, nests and eggs!

Do you see any signs of spring at your house? If not quite yet, what are you most looking forward to?

Pepper Jack Chicken

Pepper Jack Chicken

My wonderful friend Mrs. T, from Across My Kitchen Table shared this recipe for Pepper Jack Chicken this past January and I have made it for my family several times. It is an easy and delicious crockpot meal of tender chicken, colorful pepper strips and a creamy pepper jack cheese sauce. Very warming for cold winter nights!

Come on over to Seasonal Delights for the recipe! I hope you all have a wonderful Tuesday!

A Bedroom Corner Makeover

Hello everyone! Thank you for your comments about my special birthday gifts. I always enjoy hearing from you and seeing your show and tells! I did a little rearranging in my bedroom awhile back and would like to share some pictures with you...
Desk
The fern on top of my writing desk wasn't doing very well.

Plant
Lots of dying branches and no new growth. I thought maybe it needed to be closer to the window.

Plant
I also freshened up the potting soil.

Window
This window is right beside my desk, I just needed a stand of some kind.

Chari
Awhile back I found this old metal chair at the resale store for $3.o0. I have plans to spray paint it and make it a garden chair, but until then, I thought it would work as a temporary stand.

Chair
I draped a small lace tablecloth over it.

Plant
And set the fern on top. It has been a few weeks and I have noticed some new growth already!

Fern
Speaking of ferns, our kitty, Fern liked her new hideaway!

Fern

Thank you for looking at my bedroom corner makeover! I hope you have a wonderful start to your week!

Thank you for the valentine wishes, I hope you all had a wonderful day. Today I'm going to share some gifts I received for my birthday.

Last year I showed everyone these doll dress bookmarks that my special email/letter writing friend, Kelly made for me. Well, she surprised me with some more lovely gifts!

Hot Pads
A beautiful knitted potholder and two handmade dishcloths.

Heart
Heart themed for Valentine's Day! Kelly knows how much I love yellow and especially paired up with blue.

Pot holders
Here are some more pretty dishcloths she has made me in the past.

Window
I folded them all up, tied the bundle with a ribbon, and set it in my kitchen window. Thank you for the beautiful gifts, Kelly!

Blue Jay
Speaking of my kitchen window, I'd like you to meet Mr. Jay. He was a gift from my mom and she got him especially because of the lovely acorn. Some of you may remember how much I love acorns. :0)

Shelf
My mom also surprised me three beautiful mini teapots for my collection.

I love the delicate flowers.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Candy
Our Valentine's Day will begin with a special surprise: A card, mini puzzle and valentine candy. We will be busy with school work in the morning, but then take a break for...

Tea
...tea time in the afternoon. Not everything is sweet and romantic though, we are almost out of cat food, so there will be quick trip to the store afterwards. :0) Then back home to make homemade (hopefully heart shaped!) pizzas for dinner. What are your plans for the day?

Valentine Goodie Treat Bags

I hope you all aren't tired of Valentine's Day projects. :0) I made Valentine themed goodie bags for the girls that came to Grace's birthday last week.
Bag
Instead of name tags, I used red paper heart doilies and turned them into bookmarks as well!

Hearts
Cut out a heart slightly smaller than the doily, out of card stock.

Heart
Glue to the back of doily. Punch a hole at the top and tie on some ribbon.

Heart
Write a name in the middle of the heart and add stickers.

Bag
I found this shredded paper in a local store's gift wrap section. Place a small handful in a small cellophane bag.

Gifts
Now for the goodies: a small notepad, pencil, stickers and chocolates.

Bag
Place everything in the bag and secure with twist tie. Add a curling ribbon bow.

Bags
Find some special to give one too. :0)

Weekend Chit~Chat

Birdseed
Hello everyone! It was a warm February day here in Texas. We have not had any snow this year which is both surprising and sad. Having grown up in Canada, I miss having four real seasons.

Thank you for all your comments on my valentine decorations. Many of you asked where I find the time to do it all. Well, I didn't do everything all at once. The heart garland has been up for 2 weeks, I made the wreath banner and "Time to love" cards last weekend, and the centerpiece a few days ago.

I'm am a list maker (I actually use computer desktop "post-its," to keep track of everything. I have one for weekly, daily, and blogging/Seasonal Delights lists, but the truth is, I don't sit down much during the day. :0)

Grace and Emily
Well, I did sit down a lot on my birthday. The girls and I spent most of the day making Valentines! Benjamin rested on the couch and watched PBS since he wasn't feeling well.

Valentine
Here are some Valentines that I made. I meant to get pictures of the ones the girls made, but they had them sealed up in envelopes before I had a chance!
Valentines

Anyways, I always seem to run out of time like everyone else. Wouldn't a couple extra hours a day be nice?! I'll be coming by to visit you all shortly, I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Oh, one more thing...I posted some pictures and instructions for the vellum heart garland down below.

Vellum Heart Garland

Garland
This heart garland is very easy to make!

Paper
Here is what you will need: vellum paper (available at Michaels and Joannes), a heart template, scissors, hole punch, and ribbon.
Supplies

Embroidery floss
I actually used a single strand of embroidery floss instead of ribbon.

Hearts
Cut out lots of hearts and punch a hole at the top of each one.

Hearts
Thread a 2-3 inch long piece of thread through the hole and tie onto a long strand of thread (however long you want your garland). Trim ends. Repeat with all the hearts.

Window
Hang in a window so the sun can shine through!

Hello everyone! Since Valentine's Day is next week, I thought I would share some decorations around my house.
Table
I got the idea for this valentine centerpiece from my friend Susan, at A Place Called Home. She challenged us to use things we already had around the house in a recent scavenger hunt post.

Candle
I sprinkled pink rose petals on a white table runner and added a few pink candles.

Candle
In between the candles, I layered a cake plate, doily, teacup saucer, and another candle on top.

Candy
Earlier this afternoon, I swapped out the candle for a teacup and filled it with candy hearts.

Candy
The girls and Benjamin like this display the best. I wonder why. ;0)

Window
In the kitchen I hung a heart garland in the window.

Garland
I used vellum paper, so the sun could shine through.

Wreath
Moving on to the entryway, I added a valentine banner to my moss wreath.

Banner
"All for Love"

Clock
Did someone ask what time it is?

Card
It's time to...Love!

Dawn from The Feathered Nest recently shared a sweet clock trinket that she made, and I borrowed her idea to make these cards.

Card
I added a paper stand to the backs and these will be the place cards for our Valentine's Day dinner. Thank you for the idea, Dawn!

Napkins
And lastly, I turned my vintage keys into napkin rings!

Key
The tag says, "The key to my heart."

Thank you for looking at my valentine decorations!

Grace's Birthday Party

We had Grace's birthday party this past Sunday. It was an American Girl-Patriotic-Campout theme and Grace planned almost everything by herself!
Tent
Phillip set up a tent in our backyard. It was a beautiful sunny day!

Table
Grace and I set up the craft table the night before. Everyone got various blue and white scrapbook papers, stickers and 2 blank bookmarks. We also set out scissors, ribbon and bowls of pretty beads.

Food
We had sandwiches (cucumber and chicken salad), pigs in a blanket (they were baking when I took this picture), grapes, blackberries, cheese and crackers, and garlic pretzels.

Grace
All seven girls ate lunch in the tent.

Straws
We had "Fruit Fizz" to drink. All you do is mix up a frozen can of your favorite juice, and add ginger ale.

Drink
We used Strawberry Blast juice.

Grace
The bookmark craft was a hit, and afterwards the girls played a game. Grace had hidden mini flags all over the house and everyone had to see how many they could find.

Cake
Here is the cake that Grace and I made.

Grace
Last of all, Grace opened her gifts. The two hours went by very quickly and everyone had fun. I gave out Valentine goodie bags to all the girls when they left. Thank you for looking at all the pictures!

Roses
Roses to Remember by Barbara Mock

There is a "weird things about me" meme going around blogland and I'm going to let you know something weird about me today. I think some numbers are prettier than others. For example, I think that 32 is a *much* prettier number than 31. Which is why I'm happy that today is my birthday, and I no longer have to be 31. ;0)

Cake
Phillip, the girls and Benjamin have some gifts for me to open and I will spend the day relaxing, making Valentines for friends, enjoying delivery pizza for dinner, and of course eating a slice of cake! Thank you to all who have entered my spring giveaway so far!

One more thing, be sure to scroll down and see two Valentine Seasonal Delights projects. Valentine's Day is only 9 days away!

Weekend Chit~Chat

Happy February to you all! Grace had a wonderful 10th birthday yesterday. Thank you so much for the sweet and heartfelt birthday wishes. She sat next to me and read every single one!

Grace
We met Phillip for lunch at her favorite restaurant, The Macaroni Grill. We saw the same waiter that we had last year and he sang Happy Birthday to her in Italian.

Game
Phillip gave her a mathematical game for her birthday. She spent some time solving the code: 2 BEDS + 2 HOURS = 1 BUNKBED.

Bedroom
She has been begging to have her bed combined with Emily's to make bunkbeds, so Phillip took the afternoon off to do just that. This may have been her favorite present!

Pile
It was a big job!

Bedroom
But they have so much more floor space now.

Cupcakes
We ended the evening with chocolate cupcakes and ice cream.

Today I have been busy getting ready for her birthday party tomorrow. She is having 5 friends over for lunch, games, a craft, and of course cake and ice cream. The theme is American Girl-Patriotic-Campout! I'll share more pictures of her birthday and party later this week! I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend!
