I found a wonderful book at the library recently. It's called Back To The Table~The Reunion of Food and Family by Art Smith and is filled with lots of delicious recipes.
The first recipe I tried was Fluffy Yeast Rolls and everyone loved them.
Fluffy Yeast Biscuits
Makes about 2 dozen biscuits
You can refrigerate the dough overnight so you can have a big plate of biscuits ready for breakfast in no time.
Two 1/4-ounce packages active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm (105 to 115F) water
4 cups self-rising flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter, chilled, cut into thin slices
1/4 cup shortening, chilled, cut up (I used butter)
1 1/2 cups buttermilk, as needed
Sprinkle yeast over the warm water in a small bowl and let stand for 5 minutes. Stir to dissolve yeast.
Sift the flour, sugar, and baking soda in a large bowl. Add the butter and shortening. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut the butter and shortening into the flour until the mixture looks crumbly with a few pea-sized pieces of fat.
Make a well in the center, and add the yeast mixture. Stir in enough of the buttermilk to make a moist, shaggy dough. Knead in the bowl a few times, just until the dough comes together.
Transfer the dough to a medium bowl (no need to oil the bowl). Cover tightly with plastic wrap. Let stand at room temperature until the dough doubles in volume, about 45 minutes. (The dough can be made up to 1 day ahead, covered tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerated.)
Position racks in the center and top third of the oven and preheat to 400F.
Pat down the dough. Transfer to a lightly floured work surface. Pat or roll out the dough until 1/2-inch thick. Using a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter, cut out the biscuits and place them 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Gather up the scraps, knead together, and roll and cut out more biscuits until all of the dough is used.
Bake, switching the positions of the sheets from top to bottom and front to back halfway through baking, until the biscuits are golden brown, about 20 minutes*. Serve hot.
*Keep a close eye on your biscuits while baking. Mine were finished and very golden at 10 minutes.
The biscuits were perfect for our Labor Day dinner, along with corn on the cob and Mrs. H's Oven Baked Country Ribs.
The book is also filled with beautiful pictures and quotes.

I make a POINT to eat at the table every sinlge night even when we have 40 billion things going on. i will make sure we are all here....now there is that one night we eat 2 on 2...and that is fine also...because we are at church in shifts...lol. Love this book I will have to check it out.

Hi Kelli! I was thinking that you should publish your own book on homemakinng. Your pictures are beautiful, your style is simple but elegant. your reicpes are delicious, your style of writing is nice, your card making and other tutorials are done so everyone can understand "how to", etc, etc, etc. I would buy a book done by you. :-)

I have a recipe for biscuits like that. It is a Martha Stewart recipe and I love it. I make them the night before. Your pictures are great. I will have to see if my library has that book. Thanks.
There is a banana chocolate chip cake that is outstanding from this book! I am gluten free now but am trying to come up with a way to make a cake that tastes this good!

Your yeast biscuits are very similar to something I just started making this year - we call them Angel Biscuits. Got the recipe from my MIL and they are absolutely WONDERFUL. Kids love them too!! The other day I made a batch of 30 and I wondered how many we could eat if we just had a meal of angel biscuits! I love how light and fluffy they are and that you can keep the dough in the fridge for a few days - convenient make ahead for company days.

You do such neat things for people. And such nice care packages too. I have a question. I have a friend who moved away. Her birthday is in October. She reads my blog so there for I cannot put this on it. I wanted to send her a little something...I dont do well with homemade....but not more than $10..because I will be shipping it. What would you suggest. I know you dont know her....but I can tell you they moved 2000 miles away and they know no one....I just want to give her a little piece of happiness that day....any idea?

Delicious looking biscuits and your dinner looks yummy! I'll have to look for that book at the library. We eat at our table every night except on Fridays when we have Family Movie Night and I make finger foods and we eat while watching a film.

I checked this book out at the library and really enjoyed it. I thought the recipes were good, but mostly, I enjoyed the idea behind the book. It's a lovely one.

I do wonder though... were you worried about using self-rising flour, baking soda AND yeast in a recipe??? Obviously, they turned out perfectly. But I would have easily passed this recipe by and BOY would I have missed out, huh?
