"Show and Tell Friday"

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!" Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!

My show and tell this week is my new rocking chair. I have been looking for one for several years but I didn't want to spend a lot of money and I didn't want it to be too large. This one is nice and small and it was $30.00 at the resale store!

I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it by the bookshelf in the living room or...

...in front of the fireplace.

Either way it has been getting lots of use.

Fern seems to think I brought it home for her. :0)

Thank you for looking at my new rocking chair!

4th of July Decorations

Hello everyone! I did a little 4th of July decorating this past weekend and took some pictures to share with you...

I thought I would add a little red, white and blue to my kitchen window shelves. I found the angel "God Bless America" ornament at Michael's as well as the toothpick flags.

I stuck the flags in my potted plants and the mini wheelbarrow planter was on clearance for $1.00 so I got that too. :0)

I also made a "4th of July" banner for my fireplace mantle...

All you need is card stock, white paper doilies, ribbon and stickers.

My friend, Revee gave me this pretty red rose plant this past Friday. I tucked in a few of the flags and it's an instant 4th of July decoration!

We are having a "open house" BBQ on the 4th of July and since it's only a week away I should start thinking about what we are going to feed everyone! My Canadian friends will also be celebrating this coming week. Canada Day is July 1st.

Do you have any special plans?

~Scenes From My Day~

Good morning! Thank you *so* much for your notes of congratulations and blessings for our 13th wedding anniversary! Reading through them made my day extra special and I am very thankful for the friends I have made here in blogland!

The girls and Benjamin were at Vacation Bible School in the morning so I got to do some of my favorite things around the house....

I brought in some herbs and flowers from the garden and had a cup of Bigelow's Caramel Vanilla tea.

Lemon balm, Asparagus Fern and "Purple Pom-Poms." (We can't remember the actually name!)

Writing a letter to a friend...

Sometimes it pays not to weed! This Sunflower grew from winter birdseed that didn't get cleaned up.

Freshly washed bedsheets...

Banana Crumb Muffins hot from the oven.

Thank you for looking at the scenes from my day!

Wedding Anniversary

On June 25, 1994 Phillip and I said "I do" inside a sunken garden in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

I dug through some boxes last night and found a few things from that special time...

Here is what my wedding dress looked like. I tried on 3 dresses and liked this one the best. A few months later I found this picture in a magazine. It's much easier to show you this way rather than getting the dress down from my closet. Then I would have to admit that I never got it cleaned or preserved and I wouldn't want to do that. ;0)

Our invitation...

I still have our guest book. We had a small (around 40 guests) reception at our future home.

Here we are 13 years ago. We aren't as skinny now but Phillip does have shorter hair. ;0)

We actually celebrated our anniversary this past Friday night. Nana and Papa babysat while Phillip took me to a John Mayer concert. We left the house at 6:00pm and got home at 1:30am. It was worth it though!

Happy Anniversary, Phillip!! I'm looking forward to the next 13 (and many more!) years together!!

Lemon Cream Cupcakes

Hello everyone! This past Friday we had Revee and her girls over for a visit to celebrate Emily's birthday. I had a bunch of lemons to use up so I made these Lemon Cream Cupcakes.

Lemon Cream Cupcakes
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups sour cream

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add lemon peel and vanilla; mix well. Combine dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream (batter will be thick). Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups with 1/4 cup of batter. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Recipe from Allrecipes.com

Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting
4 ounces cream cheese
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
4 drops yellow food coloring

Beat cream cheese and butter in a bowl until combined. Beat in powdered sugar and lemon juice.
Beat in 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 cups more of powdered sugar till frosting is of spreading consistency. Stir in a few drops of yellow food coloring.
Note: I added a bit more lemon juice to make it extra lemony. If you do this, just add a little more powdered sugar too.
Recipe found at Allrecipes.com

We had them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream too. :0)

More lemons to use up...

You can add sliced strawberries to your lemonade for an extra treat. Let it sit for about an hour and then stir.

Last night we watched the long awaited Miss Potter. I know some of you haven't seen it yet so I won't give anything away. I will just say that I loved it and so did the girls and Benjamin!

I hope you all are having a great weekend!

Emily's 8th Birthday

Our day started out very early...7:10am. For a night owl like myself, this was very painful!

At our house, if it's your birthday you get to pick out whatever cereal you want. Emily chose the very healthy Cookie Crisp. ;0)

Opening a present before Phillip went to work.

This was her big present. A Cinderella play set, complete with a pumpkin carriage.

Today was also the day that I introduced the girls and Benjamin to the greatest show ever....The Price is Right! Phillip isn't a fan but we won't hold it against him. ;0)

Next, we went to the children's resale store for a new birthday dress. We found this pink and white polka dot one for $8.99.

In the afternoon we met Phillip at the library park to check on the baby swans.

This is what they looked like back in April...

Now they are huge and just starting to get their white feathers.

Here is the birthday girl with her dinner...grilled steak and french fries.

Grace found these cute umbrellas for the iced tea.

Promise not to laugh at my Cinderella cake?? I'm going with the "it was really hot and the icing melted" excuse. ;0) Fortunately, Emily didn't notice!

Make a wish!

Since we've been getting so much rain, Benjamin gave her a new umbrella. She thought the duck head handle was funny.

Five minutes later, it was even funnier. I'm thinking the sugar high has kicked in!

Off for a ride on the scooter. We finally made her go to bed at 10:00pm. She was just getting ready to play with her toys!

Thank you so much for the wonderful birthday wishes in the previous post!!

~Happy Birthday!!!~

Happy Birthday,  Emily!!!!

We are celebrating a special birthday today....Emily is now 8 years old!  Before she went to bed last night we had some final 7 year old snuggles and she promised she would snuggle even when she's a teenager. :0)

We have a fun day planned...playing with new toys, watching a new movie and the birthday girl has requested grilled steak for dinner!

I'm off to enjoy the day, I'll be back later, with pictures!

Roses and Josh Grobin

Thank you for your comments on my summertime decorations and Phillip's Father's Day T-shirt! On Sunday we had three friends over for lunch. We gave Phillip a new set of BBQ tools (isn't this a mandatory Father's Day gift?!) but it was too rainy to grill. Instead, I made all the ingredients for taco salad and set everything up buffet style.

Phillip gave me these "just because" roses this past Saturday. I certainly wasn't expecting them, it was Father's Day weekend, after all!

I have something else to tell you. I've discovered Josh Groban. Am I the last one? ;0)
I kept hearing this song on the radio called "February Song" and it's my latest obsession. I have a weird way of listening to music...I play the same album/song over and over again until I'm sick of it, take a break for a few months, then listen to it over and over again, etc!

Anyways, here is the video and song if you'd like to take a quick listen...

What have you been listening to lately?

Summertime Decorations

I have been slowly getting my summer decorations out this past month. Just a few things here and there...

Here is my summertime wreath. I wrapped ivy garland around a grapevine wreath, stuck in some sprigs of pink flowers, gold twirls, three large roses and a bow at the top. I didn't use any hot glue, the bow is tied on with embroidery floss. It's been several weeks and nothing has fallen off yet. ;0)

A bowl of seashells on the coffee table. I tucked in some small shells in the votive holders.

More shells on the mantle...

I made these napkin rings last year. I hot glued one or two shells to some ribbon and then tied them around each rolled up napkin.

Now on to the back patio....

A vintage hankie, bowl of lemons, and tiny fairy make up the table centerpiece. The book is called "My Mother's Garden" and is a wonderful collection of essays where the authors share their childhood gardening memories.

Finally, a wall planter and basket filled the pink impatiens. More seashells on the birdhouse and a sign that says, "Relax." Just the reminder I need for these summer months!

Thank you for looking at my summertime decorations!

It is the month of June,
The month of leaves and roses
When pleasant sights salute the eyes,
And pleasant scents the noses.

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful Fathers out there!

A special Happy Father's Day to Phillip, who has been an amazing Father for the past 9 1/2 years and to my Dad, who is the best Dad a girl could ever wish for!

Phillip got his Father's Day present early this year. He collects T-shirts and here is his latest one. Just a warning, he has a very bizarre interesting sense of humor. ;0)

Do you get it??

Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!

Some of you may have already seen my show and tell for this week. I shared pictures of it about a year ago.

It is a Victorian child's sewing box that I found it on Ebay a few years ago.

It is full of doll clothes, ribbon and lace. Unfortunately a lot of the silk has shattered over the years.

Everything was sewn by hand, including the lace and even the trim on the tiny sailor shirt.

This cape is my favorite outfit.

These patterns were tucked away in the bottom of the box.

Three tiny shoes. The top one is smaller than my thumb.

Three keys were also found inside. I wonder what they unlocked long ago...I also wonder who the little girl was that worked so lovingly on all these tiny doll clothes.

Thank you for looking at my Victorian sewing box!

A View From My Bedroom Window

Good Morning! We are on our way to visit the dentist and I can't think of a better way to spend a morning. ;0) Grace recently had a cavity filled and it's been hurting for the past few days. Hopefully it will be an easy fix!

Mari-Nanci is having a theme day at her blog, Smilnsigh. She's calling it A View From My Bedroom Window.

I have three windows in my bedroom. I don't like looking out this particular one because of a hole in our fence. A pesky rabbit is responsible for that.

He's been eating my Hosta, among many other things. In a moment of desperation I purchased something that I never though I would. No, not a shotgun. ;0) A canister of dried fox urine. The lady at the gardening center said to sprinkle the nasty smelling stuff around the yard and rabbits will stay away. I'm not sure our suburban rabbits have ever heard of a fox though so we'll have to see if it works!

Here is the view from the other window...

Well, the dentist is calling so I'm off! What are your plans for the day??

Patio Guests

The calendar says that summer is almost here (it definitely feels like summer in Texas!) but our patio guests seem to think its springtime.

To give you an idea of scale, this is the left side of our patio...

Here is the right side and far up in the right hand corner you will see an electrical box. I took these pictures on Saturday morning and the light wasn't the best but if you click on the picture, you will be able to get a closer look.

For the past 3 years a Mourning Dove couple has started to build a nest up there but the twigs would just slip off. After a few days they would give up.

I kept thinking that if they had a bit of a ledge to build on, they might be more successful. I started to look around for a very shallow basket and then spotted an empty napkin box on my counter. I cut it so it wasn't so tall, and Phillip thumbtacked it to the wall.

I wasn't expecting them to come back but the very next morning they were back to building a nest. Can you see the mama up there??

I was lucky enough to get a shot of the Dad. He brought back a twig every 10-15 seconds, all morning long.

I'm pretty sure the eggs have been laid and we can't wait to see the new babies. I have stopped vacuuming my patio carpet for the next two months. The sacrifices we make for house guests. ;0)

Puttering around the kitchen ~Part Two

Hello everyone. I've been doing some more rearranging in my kitchen. I decided to work on the appliance corner...

~Before~

I put the salad spinner in the cupboard, put a wine rack in the left corner (it had been in the garage) and put place mats under the blender and food processor.

~After~

I moved the coffee pot over to the other side of the kitchen, by the stove.

Grace and Emily talked me into going to a few yard sales on Saturday morning so I have a few "new to me" things to show you.

I'm not sure what to call this, maybe a candle lantern thingy? ;0) Whatever it is, it matches my kitchen was was $2.00!

Lastly, here are some old cookbooks that I picked up for $1.00 each. I stacked them up on my dining room hutch.

~Mrs. Rorer's New Salads ~ 1912
~The Mystery Chef's Own Cook Book ~ 1943
~The Fannie Farmer Cookbook ~ 1965

I know many of you love to read through cookbooks and "The Mystery Chef's Own Cook book is perfect for that. It begins...

"Perhaps I should start this book by answering a question that so many have asked: "How did I, a man, ever come to take up cooking as a hobby?" Well the answer is - I didn't take up cooking as a hobby. Some would say I drifted into it by accident, though I myself don't believe such things happen by accident. I am a Scot, and therefore I see design in all things."

"The preparation of delicious meals in your home is a very important thing. Excellent cooking does not mean everything to the happiness of your home, but it does make a vast difference in any home. It is, I think more important that any other one material thing. The atmosphere created at the table around which the family gathers two or three times a day is something that is surely worth of the best that is in you."

~June Blooms~

I thought I would share some of the flowers that are blooming in my gardens. We've had lots of rain and the really bad Texas heat hasn't started up yet so we are enjoying the outdoors while we can!

~Red Geraniums and tiny yellow daisies~

~Hot Pink Snap Dragons~

Greenleaf Euryops Daisies

Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!

My show and tell this week is more books. I found these school workbooks from 1929, 1933, 1935 and 1937 at the resale store a few weeks ago. They were $3.00 each. I'm sure they were much cheaper 70+ years ago!!

I love the pictures on the covers...

Here is a peek at the math workbook. There are plenty of pictures inside, some of them have been colored.

Click on the pictures to enlarge. It looks like someone didn't do their homework. :0)

Here is a page of riddles...

"I fall without a sound a sound. I cover all the world with a soft blanket of white. I keep the seed babies snug in their beds. What am I?

I come at night. I help the leaves turn red and yellow and brown. I help nuts and pumpkins ripen. I make pictures on your window. What am I?

My plan is to type up a bunch of these pages for fun summertime schoolwork and I would be happy to share them, just send me an email and let me know!

Summertime Snacks

Thank you for your sweet comments about my rearranged kitchen counters. It's nice not having to look at the wires and papers anymore!

I promised to share some summertime snack ideas this week. I don't know how it is at your house but at mine I hear "I'm hungry" a lot. Btw, a good response to this is "I'm Mommy, nice to meet you." ;0) For some reason the girls and Benjamin are never impressed with this comeback so we end looking through the fridge and pantry for a snack!

I thought I would try something new and fun for snacks this week. I bought mini cheese crackers, graham cracker sticks, pretzels and fruit bars when we went to Whole Foods on Monday. The bars are already individually wrapped but I divided everything else up and put them in small ziplock bags. This makes grabbing a snack easy, especially if you are on your way out the door to run errands or whatever.

I think fruit makes a great snack too. Pineapples were on sale so I cut it up into small chunks and put them in these reusable ziplock bowls. You could use any kind of fresh or canned fruit instead, cutting up pineapples isn't my favorite thing to do! Frozen grapes are perfect for a hot day. Emily loves mini carrots and Grace is a fan of sliced cucumbers so I bagged up some of those. We have ranch dressing to dip them in.

Cheese is another healthy snack. The little bowls are filled with cubed cheese.

Lastly, a favorite snack are these yogurt tubes. We keep them in the freezer and it's just like eating a popsicle!

I'm not a fan of juice based drinks but I will make lemonade a couple times a week. Other than that, it's plain water. To make it a little more exciting, I found these freezer mugs at Target for $1.99 each. They can be placed in the freezer and will get icy cold. Plus, straws are always fun!

As you can see, no one will be starving around here! I hope I have given you some useful ideas. Feel free to leave some of your favorite snacks in the comments!

Puttering around the kitchen

Hello everyone! I've been cleaning my kitchen today, even reaching into the corners for the cobwebs. :0)

This is my main food prep/baking counter space and after I had cleaned up, I thought it needed a little something. If you click on this picture you will see an empty dessert plate, a paper organizer, a box of napkins and my cell phone charger wire.

My goal was to use things I already had around the house. In this corner I added a blue and white toile placemat, a small basket with oranges and lemons and a candle.

Over to the right of my kitchen aid mixer I added another placemat, a soup tureen, carnations that were in the livingroom, napkins and mini salt and pepper shakers.

Here is the "after" picture. No more phone wires or messy papers!

I have a bunch of ripe bananas so I'm off to test out my tidied up baking center!

Seashell Critters

Thank you for sharing your favorite June things with me! It was fun reading through your comments and getting some great ideas!

This past weekend, we got out our summer decorations and discovered that our seashell critters had survived just fine. We made them last year, following the instructions in an old Martha Stewart magazine. Here is the story they came along with...

Sea creatures are notoriously shy, but the ones you're about to meet came out of their shells (so to speak) to tell you their story. My photographer tried his best to make this gang of beach bums smile. Some did ham it up; there are wise guys in every group!

Mr. Mouse holds a degree in architecture. He designed his own seaside bungalow, built it out of inexpensive cardboard, then covered it in shells to remind him of his childhood home.

This elegant giraffe was born in Florida, where many augers - the pointy shells that make up her neck and legs - wash ashore. "I love the beach, but I came to New York City to dance in the ballet. I have a talent for tiptoeing," she says.

The koala finds the climate in the northern hemisphere too clammy for his taste.

Tiny pink shells grace the ears of this fluffy poodle. She has just gotten back from the groomers. You do look lovely Madame poodle!

Please remember to take your animals to the shore now and then. As the bird says with a sigh, "We get a little homesick sometimes!"

I will be back soon with more summer decorating and healthy summertime snack ideas!

~Welcome June!~

"June is bursting out all over as summer finally arrives. The days are hot, the roses are in bloom and we feast on strawberries and cream."~Sarah Ban Breathnach

Joyful Simplicities for June

~Enjoy a frosty pitcher of lemonade.

~Take a trip down memory lane by catching lightening bugs or fireflies on the lawn at twilight.

~One June weekend, buy a whole watermelon and keep it in the refrigerator for at least a day so that it gets ice-cold. Cut it in large pieces and sit on the porch, back deck or front stoop eating watermelon with family or friends, spitting out the seeds. Have a contest to see who can shoot the farthest.

~Be on the lookout for a strawberry festival or hold your own. The Victorians called these homegrown events "Strawberry Regales," and the menu included every strawberry confection imaginable. Turn this into a potluck dessert party and invite friends to bring their favorite strawberry sensation.

~Celebrate the first day of summer on June 21 by camping out in the backyard. Pitch a ten, bring out the sleeping bags, build a campfire in the grill. Serve hot dogs and s'mores for dessert.

~Hang a hammock. Lie in it.

~Paint your toenails red.

~June~

The robins and blackbirds awoke me at dawn
Out in the wet orchard, beyond the green lawn,

For there they were holding a grand jubilee,
And no one had wakened to hear it but me.

The sweet honeysuckles were sprinkled with dew;
There were hundreds of spider-webs wet with it too,

And pussy-cat, out by the lilacs, I saw
Was stopping and shaking the drops from her paw.

I dressed in the silence as still as a mouse,
And groped down the stairway and out of the house.

There, dim in the dawning, the garden paths lay,
Where yesterday evening we shouted at play.

By the borders of box-wood, and under the trees
There was nothing astir but the birds and the bees.

And if all the world had been made just for me,
I thought, what a wonderful thing it would be.

This past weekend we went to a used books store where I found this set of 9 books, written by one of my favorite authors, Beatrix Potter! They were published in 1967 and are in great shape.

There is a copy of The Story of the Fierce Bad Rabbit which I had never read before. Have you read it? It's hilarious!

There are lots of pictures in each book.

We also took a trip to the library and I borrowed Aunt Bee's Mealtime in Mayberry Cookbook that had a recipe for Roly-Poly Pudding. This of course reminded me of the Beatrix Potter story that has the same name! As you know I can't go more that a few days without sharing a recipe so here it is. :0)

Roly-Poly Pudding

Biscuit Dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
2/3 cup milk

Sift together the dry ingredients in a medium bowl; then cut in the shortening and blend with a pastry blender. Add the milk a little at a time while stirring with a fork. When the dough is of a consistency that can be readily handled, it's ready to roll.

Filling:
1/4 cup softened butter, divided
3 cups cored, peeled, and finely chopped apples
1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons lemon zest (I left this out)
Cream

Prepare the biscuit dough and roll into an 8 x 12 rectangle (mine was a bit bigger). Spread 1 tablespoon of the butter over the dough. Cover the dough with the apples to within about 1 inch of the edge. In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples.

Roll up the pastry and apples like a jelly roll. Slice into pieces, 1 inch thick. Preheat the oven to 425.F (My oven is extra hot, so 400F worked fine.) Boil the granulated sugar, water, lemon juice, zest, and 2 tablespoons of the butter, and pour the dissolved mixture into a shallow baking dish. Place the rolled pieces in the water-sugar mixture. (This seemed weird to me, but the liquid thickens up into a nice sauce during baking).

Top the slices with remaining butter. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Serve hot, topped with cream.
Enjoy!
